Katherine in Northern Territory Australia

When traveling within the Northern Territory visitors must be aware  the Estuarine and Johnston River crocodiles   inhabit many rivers and billabongs.
Only swim in specially designated areas if camping outside  caravan parks.
The town of Katherine offers a wide range of accommodation from camping, caravans, cabins, budget rooms, deluxe hotel rooms, bed and breakfast and self contained apartments.
Katherine offers an ideal retreat after a day's exploring the area.
Katherine Gorge is in the Nitmibul National Park.  A most amazing place to visit and enjoy.
The Visitors Center has displays outlining the geology, landscape and Aboriginal history - which we found to be very informative.
There is also a very nice souvenir shop, toilets facilities and a kiosk which over looks the Katherine River.
There are boat cruises for Katherine Gorge.  Some of the cruises  cover the morning and visitors are back by lunch time and for the more adventurous  visitor a day long cruise.  The tour guides make the cruise very enjoyable and I would recommend either trip depending on visitors' time available.
Best time to visit Katherine would be between May to September.
If you are thinking 2012 for your next holiday, I would not hesitate to recommend a visit to the Northern Territory and especially the Katherine region.

RUBY GAP NATURE PARK

Ruby Gap is about 150 kms east of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory of Australia.
A high clearance four-wheel drive vehicle is essential owing to the condition of the track into Ruby Gap from the Arltunga Historial Reserve.
Once you enter the park's entrance there is a five kilometre drive along the riverbed- The Hale River- which is susceptible to flash flooding after heavy rains.
There are no facilities available but camping is permitted along the river.
Very small camping fees apply and deposited in the box provided at the park's entrance.
The park is generally accessible all year round, however the cooler months of April to September are more pleasant.
Ruby Gap is linked to the first mining rush in Central Australia.
In 1886, and explorer found what he thought were rubies in the bed of the Hale River. In 1888 it was found that the stones were merely high grade garnets and Central Australia's ruby boom quickly collapsed.
Ruby Gap Nature Park retains its remoteness, providing an excellent bush camping experience in Central Australia's scenic rugged terrain.
